Non-refoulement

Prohibition on returning a person to a country where they risk inhuman treatment.

A cornerstone of international refugee law, non-refoulement forbids expelling, returning or extraditing a person to a territory where their life or freedom would be threatened. Enshrined in Article 33 of the 1951 Geneva Convention and expanded by ECHR case law, it applies beyond asylum contexts.
