Amicus curiae

A person or organisation that voluntarily offers expertise to a court.

The amicus curiae — literally 'friend of the court' — is a third party, often an NGO, university or expert, that files a brief with a court to clarify a point of law, fact or public interest. Recognised by the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Court and many national jurisdictions, the practice widens judicial debate beyond the parties themselves.
